Mauritania’s ruling party wins majority parliament

Mauritania’s Election Commission says the nation’s ruling party has won a majority of seats in a second round of legislative, municipal and regional elections.

The Election Commission says Union for the Republic now has ninety three of one hundred and fifty seven seats in the National Assembly.

It also won control of all regional councils and one hundred and sixty nine of two hundred and nineteen municipalities.

The party’s victory is crucial for President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz’s political future.
